Welcome to Year 1

About Us

Mrs Jones

Hello, my name is Mrs Jones and I teach the Year 1 class. I work alongside two wonderful Learning Support Officers, Mrs Pettey (Mondays) and Mrs Davies (Tuesday-Friday). We work closely as a team and like nothing more than seeing our children smiling and laughing. We always put their wellbeing at the forefront of all that we do.

We value the support of parents and encourage them to be involved as much as possible on their child’s learning journey with us.

We hope you find this page helpful but please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the school if you have any queries and questions.

Class Information

We strongly believe in pupils having fun and engage our pupils through exciting practical experiences. Each week the children have the opportunity to think of activities they would like to do in school and share their ideas through our Pupil Voice sessions. We really do value their thoughts and opinions and they often come up with the best ideas. Baking and messy activities are often top of the list!

In Year 1 the children are beginning to become more independent and can carry out simple tasks without adult support. Accessing the Enhanced and Continuous provision during mission time is a firm favourite among pupils in Year 1. They love to have the freedom to explore the different areas of the classroom and outdoors and take great pride in the work that they produce.

We love to be outdoors in Year 1 and are very fortunate to have our own outdoor shelter attached to our classroom. Each week we plan for fun, purposeful activities that can take place outdoors. This is often where we find the children are most engaged and interested. There are so many opportunities to use our outdoor shelter during Mission Time.

We are so lucky to have our wonderful woods as part of our outdoor classroom too and one of the highlights for the children has to be our Welly Walks to the woods.

Sharing Information with Parents

Class Dojo allows us to easily and effectively communicate with parents. Every week we share photos of the children’s learning and their independent activities. Parents are more than welcome to comment on the photographs and posts and receiving any positive feedback is always gratefully appreciated. Every Friday a summary of the learning and skills that have taken place that week will be shared on Class Dojo. Phonic sounds will be shared with parents and any other additional homework such as oracy tasks or maths tasks. Each child will have access to their own portfolio page on Class Dojo and these can be used to upload any pictures of homework that the parents would like to share with us. Unfortunately we are unable to reply to the private messaging facility on Class Dojo and ask parents to avoid using this if possible.

Our Learning Tools

Children are taught their phonic sounds using the Read Write Inc. scheme. A sound is introduced each week to the children and they practise reading and writing words using that sound every day. We also use the RWI home reading scheme books and children will progress through the books depending on their phonic knowledge. There is a great emphasis on blending sounds to read words and through this method children are encouraged to read independently. Children will also be given a set of Red words to learn. These are words that cannot be sounded out and must just be learnt.
